How to Wash and Care for Compression Leggings So They Last

A great pair of sculpting leggings does real work: compression, 3D structure, squat-proof opacity. But that performance depends on the elastane and knit staying intact — and the fastest way to ruin them is the laundry routine most people use on autopilot. Here's how to keep your compression leggings performing like new, wash after wash.

Why compression fabric needs special care

The stretch and recovery in your leggings comes from elastane (spandex) woven through the knit. Elastane is sensitive to heat, harsh detergents, and fabric softeners. Damage it and the fabric loses its snap-back — leading to bagging at the knees, a waistband that rolls, and fabric that thins out and goes sheer. Good care protects all three of the things you bought the leggings for: fit, opacity, and shaping.

The do's

  • Wash in cold water. Cold preserves elastane and prevents shrinkage. Hot water is the number-one killer of stretch.
  • Turn them inside out. This protects the outer surface and the sculpting seams from friction, and helps rinse out sweat and oils where they collect.
  • Use a mild detergent. A gentle, small dose cleans without coating the fibers.
  • Wash with similar fabrics. Group leggings with other soft activewear, away from zippers and Velcro that can snag the knit.
  • Air dry — hang or lay flat. This is the single best habit for long legging life.
  • Wash after every 1–2 wears. Sweat and body oils break down elastane over time, so don't let them sit.

The don'ts

  • No fabric softener. It coats the fibers, reduces stretch recovery, and blocks moisture-wicking. This is the most common mistake.
  • No hot dryer. High heat degrades elastane fast — expect bagging and sheerness. If you must use a dryer, use no-heat or air-fluff only.
  • No bleach or harsh stain removers. They break down synthetic fibers.
  • No wringing. Twisting stretches and stresses the knit; gently press out water instead.
  • Don't leave sweaty leggings balled up. Bacteria and odor set in, and dampness degrades fabric.

Quick fixes for common issues

  • Lingering odor? Soak in cold water with a splash of white vinegar for 20–30 minutes before washing — it neutralizes odor without harming fibers.
  • Pilling? Wash inside out with like fabrics and avoid rough surfaces; a fabric shaver can gently remove existing pills.
  • Waistband feeling loose? Skip the dryer and always air dry — heat is usually the cause of lost elasticity.

The 30-second routine

Inside out → cold wash → mild detergent, no softener → hang or lay flat to dry. That's it. Follow it and a quality pair will keep its compression, sculpting structure, and squat-proof opacity for years.
